Questions for Dr. Judge: Can You Exfoliate Too Much?

Your skin continuously produces something called Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), which is essential for normal skin hydration, barrier function, regular cell shedding, and suppleness. Harsh products and over exfoliating and cleansing can strip the skin of this protective coating and can make your skin more fragile, dry, and irritated. It can also make your skin less able to protect and heal itself.

Please be kind to your skin. Don’t strip off the good stuff.

Normal to oily skin types can usually tolerate daily exfoliation. But if you have sensitive skin, you should not exfoliate more often than once or twice a week.
